If you’ve ever taken an edible, watched a whole movie, and thought “I don’t feel anything, maybe I should take more,” you’re not alone. The wait is the part that trips most people up. Then they double-dose, the original one finally kicks in, and now they’re way higher than they meant to be. Standard edibles take 60 to 90 minutes to come on for most people, sometimes longer. There’s a good reason for that, and once you understand it, the whole “wait it out” thing makes more sense.
Looking for something with a faster onset? We carry fast-acting nano edibles that kick in within 15 to 30 minutes. Browse the Cannabis & Glass or stop into the shop and we’ll show you what’s worth trying.
Why the Wait Is Built In
When you eat an edible, the THC has to take the long way around. It goes through your stomach, into your small intestine, gets absorbed, and then travels to your liver. Your liver converts the THC into a different compound (11-hydroxy-THC) before it enters your bloodstream and makes it to your brain. Compare that to smoking or vaping, which takes minutes because the THC goes straight from your lungs into your blood. The digestive route is just slower by nature.
Why does it last so long? 11-hydroxy-THC (the metabolite your liver creates) sticks around in your system longer than inhaled THC. Plan for 4 to 8 hours.
Can I speed it up by exercising or drinking water? Marginal effect at best. Best approach is just patience.
What if I took too much? Find a comfortable spot, hydrate, eat something light, and remind yourself it’ll wear off. CBD products can sometimes take the edge off. Not medical advice, just what a lot of customers report.
What Slows It Down Even More

You ate recently. A full stomach slows digestion. If you took an edible right after a big meal, expect onset to push toward 2 hours or longer.
Your metabolism. Faster metabolizers feel edibles faster but for a shorter window. Slower metabolizers wait longer but ride it out longer too.
What kind of edible. Gummies and hard candies that you suck on actually start absorbing through your mouth a bit, which can speed onset slightly. Capsules and brownies wait until they hit your gut.
Your tolerance. Regular cannabis users still wait the same time for onset, but they may feel less intensity at the same dose.
How much should I take if I’ve never had an edible? 2.5 to 5mg for a first try. You can always take more next time. You can’t take less once it’s in.
The 11-hydroxy-THC Difference
Here’s the part most people don’t know: when your liver processes THC from an edible, it converts a lot of it into 11-hydroxy-THC, which is a different compound than the Delta-9 THC you get from smoking. 11-hydroxy is generally considered more intense per milligram. That’s why edibles can feel stronger than the equivalent in smoke, and why the high can last 4 to 8 hours instead of 1 to 3.
The Beginner Mistake (and How to Avoid It)
“It’s been 45 minutes and I don’t feel anything, I’ll take another.” Then the first one kicks in, the second one kicks in 30 minutes later, and now you’ve doubled your dose without meaning to. The fix: pick your dose, set a timer for 2 hours, and don’t touch another edible until that timer goes off. If you’re still wanting more after 2 hours, then take a half dose more. Patience prevents the bad nights.
If You Want Fast Onset

Nano edibles use nanoemulsion technology to get THC into your bloodstream much faster. Onset is typically 15 to 30 minutes. Duration is also shorter (2 to 4 hours instead of 4 to 8), but for a lot of people, the predictability is worth it.
Some edibles now contain CBN, CBG, or other minor cannabinoids blended with THC for different effect profiles. Worth knowing when you read the label.
